Introduction To The Poem
For a little school going child, a teacher is special.He is told be respectful and discliplined. In a way, he lives in awe or fear of the teacher. There is a little interaction between the two. So the teacher becomes something of mystery. The child wonders if his teacher is a person like any other in his own home or neighbourhood. He compares the teacher with his own uncle who has a family, and who watches TV and washes his clothes.
The poem captures the feelings of an innocent child when he thinks about his teacher.
Summary In English
It is difficult for a small student to accept that his teacher is an ordinary person. He knows nothing about the teacher's family, habits, parents and lifestyle. At 4 o' clock when the school closes for the day, the child goes back to his house. He wonders where his teacher goes after 4 o' clock or what his daily chores are.
An ordinary person changes into casual dress at home. For entertainment he watches TV. He picks his nose and washes his socks. In a joint family, his aged parents are also with him. The child wonders if his teacher is any different from an ordinary person.
Next the child wants to know about the teacher's own childhood. Was he naughty as a child ? Did he spell words incorrectly and make mistakes ? Was he ever punished for stealing chocolates from another child's bag ? Did he ever misplace his prayer book or left green vegetables untouched at lunch ? The child is often rebuked for running his pencil on desk or for wearing dirty jeans. He wants to know if his teacher also at school stage behaved in the same way.
The child is curious to get answers to his queries. He decides to go after his teacher to his home and note what he does. Then he will put his findings in a poem, which teachers may have to read and teach in the class.

एक छोटे छात्र के लिये यह स्वीकार कर पाना कठिन होता है कि उसका शिक्षक एक साधारण व्यक्ति है। वह अपने शिक्षक के परिवार के बारे में , उसकी आदतों, माता - पिता तथा जीवन - शैली के बारे में अनजान रहता है। सायं 4 बजे जब स्कूल की छुट्टी हो जाती है , बच्चा अपने घर चला जाता है। वह समझ नहीं पाता कि उसका शिक्षक चार बजे के बाद कहाँ जाता है और उसकी दिनचर्या क्या होती है ?
एक आम व्यक्ति तो घर पहुंचकर घर के सामान्य वस्त्र पहन लेता है। मनोरंजन हेतु वह टी.वी देख लेता है। वह अपनी नाक साफ़ करता है तथा अपने मोज़े धोता है। संयुक्त परिवार में उसके वृद्ध माता - पिता भी उसके साथ रहते है। बच्चे को हैरानी होती है कि क्या उसका शिक्षक आम व्यक्ति से भिन्न होता है।
इसके बाद बच्चे को यह जानने की जिज्ञासा होती है कि शिक्षक का बचपन कैसा था। क्या वह एक शैतान बालक था ? क्या वह भी शब्द गलत लिखता था तथा गलतियाँ करता था ? क्या उसे भी कभी दुसरे बालक के थैले से चॉक्लेट चुराने पर दंड मिला था ? क्या उसने कभी अपनी प्रार्थना पुस्तिका खो दी थी अथवा भोजन में हरी सब्जी छोड़ दी थी ? बच्चे को तो अक्सर ही अपनी पेंसिल से डेस्क के ऊपर लकीर खींचने के लिए अथवा गन्दी पतलून पहनकर आने पर डांट - फटकार पड़ती है। वह जानना चाहता है कि क्या उसका शिक्षक स्कूल में इसी प्रकार से आचार - व्यव्हार करता था।
बच्चा अपने इन प्रश्नों का उत्तर पाने को आतुर है। वह सोच लेता है कि वह शिक्षक के घर जाएगा तथा उसकी गतिविधियों को नोट करेगा। फिर वह अपनी जानकारी को एक कविता के रूप में लिख देगा जिसे शायद शिक्षकों को कक्षा में पढ़कर सुनाना तथा पढ़ाना पड़े।
