Introduction To The Story

This lesson is a thoughtful commentary on education and its real aim. Our schools are not just factories to turn out standardised degree holders. The real objective is to train the children to become decent human beings and good citizens. The state as well as educationists have lost that vision. Education has been commercialised.
The story describes the experiment being made by Miss Beam. She is a woman of new and original ideas. She explains her philosophy to the author in very simple words. Every child compulsarily gets a mock experience of blindness, lameness, dumbness and deafness at least on one day during the session. This personal experience of misfortune makes them kind and helpful.
The author likes Miss Beam's idea and the way she puts it into practice.

Summary In English

The author had heard a great deal about Miss Beam's school. One day he paid a visit to it. As he entered the gate, he saw a 12 - year old girl being led by a younger boy. Her eyes were covered with a bandage. She seemed to enquire about the visitor, and her guide described the author to her.
The author found Miss Beam much as he had expected. She was a middle aged, impressive but kindly woman. She told the author about her method of schooling. She taught the children simple spelling, maths and writing. The author wanted to know what the originality of her system was. She said that real aim of education was to make children thoughtful, kind, helpful and responsible citizens.
The author looked out of the window. He said that he was pained to see some blind and crippled children in the ground. Miss Beam laughed away the author's fears. She explained to him that none of the children were blind or lame. They were only playing a game. It was part of their training to know and share a bit of misfortune. Each term every child had one blind day, one lame day, one dumb day, one injured day and one deaf day.
During the blind day, the bandage on the eyes is put over night. The child gets up blindfolded. He or she is helped all day long by another child. The blind day was really the worst.
Miss Beam led the author to a bandaged girl and left him with her to talk. The girl told him that it was awful to be blind. She felt every moment that she was going to be hit by something. She, however, never tried to peep because that would be dishonesty.
She agreed to be taken for a walk provided the author promised to describe persons and places to her. The author pointed out that Miss Beam was walking with a tall girl. On being asked, he said that the tall girl was wearing a blue skirt and a pink blouse and her hair was light. The bandaged girl guessed that she must be Millie, the Head Girl. Then the author described the old gardener, and a girl Anita with curly red hair.
After a while, the author discovered that describing things and people made him a thoughtful and keen observer. This exercise also made those things and people more interesting. He felt like staying in the school for some time more. He was greatly impressed.

Summary In Hindi

लेखक ने मिस बीम के स्कूल के बारे में ढेर सी बातें सुन रखी थी। एक दिन वह स्कूल देखने पहुँच गया। जैसे ही उसने गेट प्रवेश किया ,  उसने एक 12 वर्षीय बच्ची को एक छोटे लड़के द्वारा घुमाते हुए देखा। बच्ची की आँख पर पट्टी बँधी थी। ऐसा लगा कि उसने आगन्तुक के बारे में पूछताछ की और बालक ने लेखक के बारे में जानकारी दे दी। 
लेखक ने मिस बीम को लगभग वैसा ही पाया जैसी उसने कल्पना या उम्मीद की थी। वह एक अधेड़ आयु की रौबदार परन्तु सहृदय महिला थी। उसने लेखक को अपनी शिक्षापद्दति के बारे में बताया। वह बच्चों को शब्द के हिज्जे लिखना , गणित तथा लिखने की कला सिखाती थी। लेखक ने जानना चाहा कि उसकी पद्दति में मौलिकता क्या है ? बीम ने बताया कि शिक्षा का वास्तविक उद्देश्य होता है बच्चों को विचारशील , दयालु , सहायता के लिए तैयार रहना तथा समझदार नागरिक बनाना। 
लेखक ने खिड़की के बाहर देखा। वह बोला कि उसे यह देखकर पीड़ा हो रही है कि मैदान में कुछ बच्चे दृष्टिहीन अथवा लंगड़े है। मिस बीम ने हंसकर उसके भय को दूर किया। उसने स्पष्ट किया कि कोई भी बच्चा अँधा या लंगड़ा नहीं है। वे केवल खेल खेल रहे है। यह उनके प्रशिक्षण का ही एक भाग है कि वे विपदा के बारे में जानें तथा उसमें सहभागी बनें। हर सत्र में हर बच्चे के लिए एक दिन अँधा बनने का , एक गूंगा , एक बहरा तथा एक घायल बनने का नियत है। अँधा बनने वाले दिन बच्चे की आँख पर पट्टी पिछली रात से ही बाँध दी जाती है। बच्चा पट्टी बांधे उठता है। उसे सारा दिन कोई अन्य बच्चा मदद देता रहता है। दृष्टिहीन बनने वाला दिन सबसे बुरा या कठिन होता है। 
मिस बीम लेखक को एक पट्टी बंधी लड़की के पास छोड़ आयी ताकि वह उससे बात कर ले। लड़की ने उसे बताया कि अँधा बनने का खेल बहुत बुरा होता है। उसे हर क्षण यही डर लगता रहता है कि वह किसी चीज से टकराने वाली है। पर उसने चोरी से झाँका कभी नहीं क्योंकि वह बेईमानी कही जाती। 
वह लेखक के साथ सैर के लिये राजी हो गयी बशर्ते लेखक उसे लोगों तथा स्थानों के बारे में जानकारी देते रहने का वचन दे। लेखक ने बताया कि मिस बीम किसी लम्बी लड़की के साथ टहल रही है। पूछने पर वह बोला कि लम्बी लड़की ने नीली स्कर्ट तथा गुलाबी ब्लाउज पहन रखी है तथा उसके बाल हल्के रंग के है। अंधी बनी लड़की ने अनुमान लगाया कि वह अवश्य ही हेडगर्ल मिली होगी। फिर लेखक ने वृद्ध माली तथा एक लाल घुंघराले बालों वाली लड़की अनिता के बारे में जानकारी दी। 
कुछ समय पश्चात लेखक को पता चला कि लोगों एवं वस्तुओं का वर्णन करने से वह कही अधिक विचारशील तथा पैनी दृष्टि वाला बन गया है। इस अभ्यास से वे लोग तथा वस्तुएँ भी रोचक बन गईं। उसका मन हुआ कि कुछ समय और स्कूल में बिताये। वह अत्यधिक प्रभावित हो गया था।
