Introduction To The Story
The Banyan tree is a typical Indian tree. It is huge in size. Its branches soetimes touch the ground and take roots. They provide cool shade to travellers, birds and beasts. It is even worshipped on a particular day. Ruskin Bond's story, however, deals very little with the tree itself. The tree served him as a seat to watch the activities below. One day he was thrilled to see a fight between a mongoose and cobra. It was a fight between two champions.
It went on for a pretty long time. Both were well - matched. In addition to the writer, there were two other witnesses to the deadly drama - a myna and a wild crow.
The snake six feet long raised its hood and struck again and again. But the mongoose not only escaped but also bit it on the back. When the cobra was tired out, the mongoose killed it and dragged it into the bushes.
Summary in English
The Banyan Tree gives a blood chilling account of a fight between a mongoose and a cobra. They lived somewhere in the holes beneath the banyan tree. The author was hiding in its branches. He watched the fight going on in a clearing in bright sunshine.
The grey mongoose was three feet long while the cobra was six feet in length. Both were excellent and experienced fighters. Both could move with the speed of light. The cobra had his small bags behind the teeth full of deadly poison. It has a battle of champions.
Besides the writer, there were two other spectators or onlooks. One was a myna bird and the other a wild crow. They settled on a cactus plant and even intervened in the play.
The cobra raised half his body off the ground. The long hair on the mongoose's back also stood up. The snake wanted to mesmerise his enemy to make a wrong move. But the mongoose fixed his eyes just below the snake's hood. As he went near, the snake struck. But the little one jumped to one side and even bit the snake on back. In the second round again, the mongoose bit. The two birds also tried to hurt the snake but failed. They hit each other in mid air but flew safely back to the cactus. In the third round they tried again. The myna was lucky enough to escape. But the crow had hard luck. The cobra bit the bird which died in a few minutes.
The cobra by this time had become tired and weak.The mongoose walked fearlessly up to it and caught the cobra by its neck. The cobra coiled itself about the little one, but did not have the strength to tighten its grip. It stopped its struggle and lay dead. The mongoose first made sure that it was dead. Then he dragged it into the bushes. The myna congratulated the winner from a safe distance and flew away.

The Banyan Tree (वट वृक्ष ) हमें एक नेवला तथा नाग की लड़ाई की दास्तान सुनाता है। ये दो अपने - अपने बिलों में बरगद वृक्ष के नीचे रहते थे। लेखक पेड़ की शाखाओं में छिपा बैठा था। यह लड़ाई खुले स्थान पर धुप में हुई। लेखक उसे देखता रहा।
सलेटी रंग का नेवला तीन फुट लम्बा था जबकि नाग छह फुट लम्बा था। दोनों ही अत्युत्तम तथा अनुभवी योद्धा थे। दोनों ही बिजली की गति से भाग सकते थे। नाग के लम्बे दांतों पीछे विष से भरी थैलियां थी। यह द्वन्द युद्ध था दो महारथियों के बीच।
लेखक के अलावा वहां दो अन्य दर्शक भी आ गए। एक थी मैना तथा दूसरा था जंगली कौवा। वे एक कँटीले पौधे पर आकर बैठ गए तथा उन्होंने इस खेल में भी दखल दिया।
नाग ने अपना आधा शरीर जमीन से ऊपर उठा लिया। नेवले के पीठ के बाल भी खड़े हो गए। सॉँप अपने शत्रु को सम्मोहित करके उसे कोई गलत चाल चलने को प्रेरित करना चाहता था। पर नेवले ने अपनी दृष्टि नाग के फन के ठीक नीचे गड़ा रखी थी। जैसे ही वह निकट गया , साँप ने वार किया। पर नेवला एक ओर उछल गया और उसने साँप की पीठ पर काट भी लिया। दुसरे दौर में भी नेवले ने काटा। दोनों पक्षियों ने भी सांप को चोट पहुंचाने का प्रयास किया, पर असफल रहे। हवा में वे टकरा गए पर सुरक्षित अपने अड्डे पर पहुँच गये। तीसरे दौर में दोनों ने पुनः कोशिश की। मैना तो भाग्यवान था कि वह बच निकली। पर कौवा का किस्मत धोखा दे गयी। नाग ने उसे डस लिया तथा कुछेक मिनटों में उसने दम तोड़ दिया।
इस समय तक नाग थक गया था , कमजोर हो गया था। नेवला निर्भय उसके पास पहुँचा तथा उसे गर्दन से दबोच लिया। नाग ने स्वयं को नेवले के शरीर पर लपेट लिया पर उसमे इतनी शक्ति शेष नहीं थी कि अपनी जडक को कस ले। उसका संघर्ष करना थम गया तथा वह निर्जीव हो गया। नेवले ने पहले तो यह सुनिश्चित किया कि साँप मर चूका है। फिर वह झाड़ियों के अंदर घसीट ले गया। मैना ने सुरक्षित दूरी से ही विजेता को बधाई दी तथा उड गई।
