Introduction To The Poem

What if is an interesting poem. It reveals the working of young heads. Children are as a rule foot loose and fancy free. They don't under the logic of cause and effect, the possible and the impossible. You can't argue with them because there is no such thing as reasoning for them. They entertain silly fears and funny events.
Silverstein's poem has no moral or message. The child's fanciful mental pictures do not make you laugh. Even adults sometimes try to do the impossible or regret that they can't have their way.

Summary in English

It is natural and common that sometimes our mind fills with nonsensical fears. These are imaginary and can never take actual shape.
The poet recalls how the previous night he lay in bed. His mind ran riot. He thought of some dangerous happenings. He calls them 'What ifs'. Supposing, he loses his power of speech in school. What consequence will be. Or if the school bans swimming in the pool, or somebody beats up him, or puts poison into his cup. Supposing he starts crying or falls ill and dies, or fails in the test, or has green hair growing on his chest. Supposing people start hating him, or a lightning falls and hits him, or he starts growing taller, or his head becoming smaller in size. Again, if the fish change their nature and give up biting, or the wind tears up his kite or a war breaks out. Supposing his parents break up and decide to part, or if the school bus arrives late, or he fails to learn dance. Finally, when everything is all right, such silly fears and suppositions strike him again at night.
The poet has no answer to such questtions, he doesn't know how to get rid of such worries.

Summary in Hindi

यह स्वाभाविक तथा आम बात है कि कभी - कभी हमारा मस्तिष्क मूर्खतापूर्ण भय से भर जाता है। ये भय काल्पनिक होते है और कभी भी यथार्थ का रूप नहीं ले सकते। 
कवि स्मरण करता है कि वह पिछली रात बिस्तर पर लेटा हुआ था। उसका दिमाग बेहिसाब दौड़ - भाग करने लगा। उसे कुछ खतरनाक घटनाओ का विचार आ गया। वह उन्हें 'यदि ऐसा हो तो क्या हो ' की संज्ञा देता है। 
मान लो उसकी वाकक्षमता स्कूल में ख़त्म हो जाती है तो परिणाम क्या होगा। अथवा यदि स्कूल स्विमिंग पूल में नहाने पर प्रतिबन्ध लगा दे अथवा कोई व्यक्ति उसे पीट दे अथवा उसके प्याले में विष घोल दे। मान लो वह चीख - पुकार करने लगे अथवा वह बीमार पड़कर परमात्मा को प्यारा हो जाता है अथवा परीक्षा में अनुतीर्ण हो जाता है अथवा उसकी छाती पर हरे रंग के बाल उग आते है। मान लो लोग उससे नफरत  करने लगते है , अथवा उसके ऊपर आकाश से बिजली गिर जाती है , अथवा उसके लम्बा होने का सिलसिला थम जाता है , अथवा उसकी खोपड़ी छोटी होने लगती है। 
यदि मछलियां अपना स्वाभाव बदल कर काटना छोड़ देती है , अथवा पवन उसकी पतंग को फाड़ देती है अथवा कोई युद्ध छिड़ जाता है। यदि कहीं उसके माता - पिता में तालाक हो जाता है, अथवा स्कूल की बस विलम्ब से आती है अथवा उसके दाँत व्यवस्थित तरीके से नहीं निकलते , अथवा वह स्वयं अपनी पतलून फाड़ देता है अथवा वह नृत्य सीखने में असफल रहता है। अंत में , जब हर चीज ठीक - ठाक चल रही हो तभी रात को अनेक ऐसी मूर्खतापूर्ण आशंकाए और भय उसे पुनः सताने लगे। 
कवि के पास इन प्रश्नो का कोई उत्तर नहीं है। वह यह भी नहीं जानता कि इनसे किस प्रकार वह छुटकारा पा सकता है।
