Introduction To The Story

Kalpana Chawla was part of the crew on board the space shuttle Columbia. She became the first woman in India to go into space. It was the second mission of Columbia. But in ended in tragedy. The shuttle was going to land on February 1, 2003, when it caught fire and went up in flames. All the seven astronauts on board were killed. The shuttle had stayed in orbit for 16 days.
India is still lagging far behind in space technology. India has lately put several crafts in space to improve the communication system, and all of them are doing well. Indian women are now marching ahead and replacing men in fields which were reserved only for them. China, on the other hand, has made a big headway in every field. But India is determined to overtake our Asian neighbours.

Summary In English

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Harayana. As a child, she had never dreamed of going into space. After graduating from Tagore school, she joined an engineering college. She got her bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering. She then went for a master's degree to the United States. She earned her Ph. D. in aerospace engineering. She was the first Indian American woman to go into space from Florida. She obtained the citizenship of US and married an American. She learnt to fly all sorts of airplanes.
She applied to NASA Space Shuttle Progamme. In 1994, she was selected for training as an astronaut. Her first space mission in Columbia lasted for nearly 16 days. When the news of the Columbia disaster broke, the town of Karnal spent a sleepless night. Thousands of people hoped and wished that she should survive. she was truly a heroine. She knew a lot about many branches of science. Only after that she was able to become an astronaut. Her achievements were awe - inspiring.
For millions of young Indians, the story of Kalpana Chawla has become an inspiration. She sent a message from aboard the space shuttle to students of her college in chandigarh. She told them that the path of success was open for them. They needed only vision to find that path and the courage to walk on it. She wished them a great journey.

कल्पना चावला हरियाणा के करनाल जिले में जन्मी थी। जब वह बच्ची थी उसने कभी अंतरिक्ष में जाने का सपना भी नहीं देखा था। टैगोर स्कूल में स्नातक बनने के पश्चात उसने इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेज में प्रवेश लिया। उसने वायुयान सम्बन्धी इंजीनियरिंग में डिग्री ली। फिर वह स्नातकोत्तर डिग्री के लिए अमेरिका चली गयी। उसने वहाँ अंतरिक्ष इंजीनियरिंग में डॉक्टरेट की डिग्री प्राप्त की। वह पहली भारतीय मूल की अमरीकी महिला थी जो अंतरिक्ष में फ्लोरिडा से उडी थी। उसने अमरीका की नागरिकता भी प्राप्त  कर ली तथा एक अमरीकी से विवाह कर लिया। उसने सभी प्रकार के यानों के संचालन का प्रशिक्षण ले लिया। 
उसने नासा अंतरिक्ष यान प्रोग्राम में शामिल होने के लिये आवेदन किया। 1994 में उसे अंतरिक्ष यात्री के प्रशिक्षण के लिये चुन लिया गया। उसका कोलंबिया में पहला अंतरिक्ष अभियान 16 दिनों तक चला। जब कोलंबिया के दुर्घटनाग्रस्त होने का समाचार आया तो पूरे करनाल नगर ने रात आँखों में काटी। हज़ारों लोग यही आशा तथा प्रार्थना करते रहे की कल्पना बच जायेगी। वह सचमुच एक वीरांगना थी। उसने अनेक  विज्ञान विषयों में महारत हासिल की। तब जाकर उसमे अंतरिक्ष यात्री बनने की योग्यता आई। उसकी उपलब्धियाँ आश्चर्यजनक थी। 
लाखों युवा भारतियों के लिये कल्पना की कहानी एक प्रेरणास्त्रोत बन गई है। उसने कोलंबिया यान पर से अपने चंडीगढ़ कॉलेज के छात्रों को सन्देश भेजा था। उसने उन्हें बताया बताया कि तुम्हारे लिए सफलता का मार्ग खुला हुआ है। तुम्हे ज़रुरत है एक स्वप्न की , जो वह मार्ग खोज ले , और उस पर चलने का साहस करे। उसने सभी के लिए महान यात्रा की कामना की।
