Introduction To The Story

In every fair one come across little shops that give one an opportunity to try one's luck. Such outlets are given fancy names. The master of the show is usually a crafty fellow. He has his friends or agents in the crowd. He first gives away costly things to his agent and then pays cash for it. This he calls luck. The drama tempts innocent people , chiefly youngsters to take a chance. They are cheated.
In the story Rasheed was one such victmin at Lucky Shop in the fair. He took several chances, hoping to win a big prize. But every time he got some cheap thing which the shopkeeper bought back for 25 paise each. Rasheed lost all he had. He cursed his luck. But his uncle explain to him the trick. He said that he (Rasheed) was not unlucky but foolish.

Summary In English

Every year there was a fair in our village on Eid day. It lasted many days. It attracted tradesmen from far and near. They bought all kinds of goods to sell.
The narrator, Rasheed, went to the fair with his uncle. Bhaiya the sevant in the house also went with the two. There was a big crowd. The uncle met a few of his friends. So he let the boy to look around the fair with Bhaiya. He, however, warned the boy not to buy anything, and not to go too far out in his absence.
Rasheed with Bhaiya went from shop to shop. They came to a shop called Lucky Shop. There anybody could try his luck. It was run by a middle - aged man, neither too smart nor too lazy. Placed on the table were discs with number one to ten on one side. One could pick up any six discs, add up the numbers on the discs and find the total. He was to pay 50 paisa for each chance. He could claim a thing marked with that total number.
The shopkeeper was a very clever fellow. He had his friends or agents in the crowd. he used a trick to make a fool of people. An old man paid 50 paise and and selected six discs. The total number came to 15 and he won a beautiful clock worth 15 rupees. The shopkeeper bought it back for 15 rupees. The old man went away very pleased.
Then came a boy who tried his luck four times. he got a comb, a fountain pen and a wrist watch and finally a table lamp worth 25 rupees. The shopkeeper again bought back all the times and paid him a good deal of money.
Rasheed also wanted to try his luck. Bhaiya encouraged him. He first won two pencils worth 25 paise. Next time he got a bottle of ink worth 25 paise. He took the third chance but luck did not favour him. Every time he tried, he got some cheap thing. He lost all the money he had.
People looking at him laughed at his bad luck. He returned to the place where he had been told to wait. Uncle came. He found Rasheed upset. He was neither sad nor angry when he heard the story. He only smiled and patted the boy. He took Rasheed to a shop and bought him an umbrella, biscuits and sweets. They returned home.
Back home, uncle explained to Rasheed that the Lucky Shop man had only made a fool of him. The old man and the boy winning a couple of costly things were actually the shopkeeper's friends. They were playing tricks to the rob others. It was wrong to think that Rasheed had bad luck. It was neither good luck nor bad luck. It was only his foolishness.

Summary In Hindi

हर वर्ष ईद के अवसर पर गांव में एक मेला लगता था। वह कई दिनों तक चलता रहता था। उसमे पास और दूर से अनेक दुकानदार सभी प्रकार के सामान बेचने आते थे। 
रशीद अपने अंकल के साथ मेला देखने गया। उनके साथ उनका नौकर भैया भी गया। मेले में बहुत भीड़ थी। अंकल की भेंट अपने कुछ मित्रों से हो गयी। इसलिए उन्होंने बालक को भैया के साथ मेला घूमने की अनुमति दे दी। पर यह चेतावनी दे दी कि न कुछ खरीदना , न ही उनकी अनुपस्थिति में उस स्थान से दूर जाना। 
रशीद भैया के साथ दुकानों का चक्कर लगाने लगा। वे एक 'लकी शॉप ' पर पहुंचे, वहां कोई भी व्यक्ति अपनी किस्मत आजमा सकता था। इसका मालिक था एक अधेड़ आयु का व्यक्ति जो न तो बहुत चुस्त था न ही बहुत सुस्त। उसके सामने मेज पर एक ओर संख्या लिखी गोल गोटियाँ रखी थीं। खेलने वालो को 6 गोटियाँ उठानी थी तथा उन पर लिखी संख्या का योग करना था। 50 पैसे उसे हर बार देने थे। वह उस वस्तु को पा सकता था जिस पर लिखी संख्या योग वाली संख्या से मेल खाती हो। 
दुकानदार बहुत चालाक व्यक्ति था। भीड़ में उसके मित्र अथवा एजेंट थे। वह एक चाल खेलकर उन्हें मुर्ख बनाता था। एक वृद्ध ने 50 पैसे दिये तथा 6 गोल चक्कियाँ उठा ली। योग आया 15 और वृद्ध को एक सुन्दर घडी मिल गई , जिसका मूल्य 15 रुपये था। दुकानदार ने घड़ी को 15 रुपये वापस खरीद ली। वृद्ध खुश - खुश वहाँ से चला गया। 
फिर आया एक बालक जिसने चार बार अपनी किस्मत आजमाई। उसे एक कंघी , एक फाउंटेन पेन , एक हाथ घडी तथा एक 25 रुपये मूल्य वाला टेबल लैंप हाथ लग गया। दूकानदार ने इन सभी चीजों को अच्छी कीमत पर खरीद लिया।  
रशीद भी अपनी किस्मत परखना चाहता था। भैया ने उसे प्रोत्साहित किया। उसने पहली बार में दो पेन्सिलें जीती। अगली बार उसने 25 पैसे की कीमत की दवात जीती। उसने तीसरा दाँव लिया पर उसकी किस्मत ने साथ नहीं दिया। हर बार उसे कुछ सस्ती चीज ही मिली। उसने अपना सारा पैसा गँवा दिया। 
जो लोग उसे देख रहे थे , उसकी बदकिस्मती पर हंस रहे थे। रशीद वापस उस स्थान पर आ गया जहाँ उसे प्रतीक्षा करना था। अंकल आ गये। उन्होंने रशीद को खिन्न पाया। वह न तो उदास हुए , न ही नाराज। जब उन्होंने कहानी सुनी , वह केवल मुस्कुरा दिए तथा उन्होंने बालक की पीठ थपथपाई। वह रशीद को लेकर एक दुकान पर गए तथा उसे एक छतरी , बिस्कुट तथा मिठाई खरीद दी। वे घर लौट आये। 
घर लौटकर अंकल ने रशीद को बताया कि लकी शॉप वाला आदमी तुम्हे उल्लू बना रहा था। वह बूढ़ा व्यक्ति तथा वह बालक जिन्होंने कई कीमती चीजें जीती थी , वे वास्तव में दुकानदार के ही मित्र थे। वे तो दूसरों को ठगने के लिए चाल चल  रहे थे। यह सोचना गलत होगा कि रशीद की किस्मत ने साथ नहीं दिया। इस खेल में न तो खुशकिस्मती था और न ही बदकिस्मती। यह तो बालक रशीद की मूर्खता मात्रा थी।
