WORKING WITH THE POEM
1. (i) Who is the speaker in the poem?
(ii) With your partner list out the happenings the speaker is worried about.
(iii) Why do you think she/he has these worries? Can you think of ways to get rid of such worries?
Answer:
(i) This poem is spoken by some grown - up boy or girl.
(ii) The speaker's worries are related to his own well being, his school, his parents, the world at large. He wonders how he will cope with the situations if he goes dumb, get beaten, is poisoned, is hit by lightning, is taken ill, gets his head become smaller. In a fit of wildness, he can also tear his pants. His parents get separated. A war breaks out and the fish change their habits.
(iii) The he/she is worried because he thinks too much. He should stop discussing or reading ghost stories, Harry Potter's magical feats and go to bed early.
2. Read the following line.
Some Whatifs crawled inside my ear
Can words crawls into your ear? This is an image. The poet is trying to make an image of what she/he experiences. Now with your partner try and list out some more images from the poem.
Answer:
Words can be heard through the ears. They cannot move and enter the ears.
Examples of images:
- What if I get beat up?
- What if a bolt of lightning strikes me?
- What if the wind tears up my kite?
- What if I tear my pants?
3. In groups of four discuss some more 'whatifs' that you experience in your day to day life and list them out.
