Answer:
Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, Harayana. By her birth in India, she was an Indian citizen. But she obtained American citizenship. So she is called an Indian American.

2. When and why did she go to the U.S.? Who did she marry? (2, 3)
Answer:
She went to the US for a master's degree. Later she earned her doctorate in aerospace engineering. She married an American flight instructor Jean Pierre Harrison.

3. How did she become an astronaut? What gave her the idea that she could be an astronaut? (3)
Answer:
In 1994, she was selected by NASA for training as an astronaut. Her first space mission was in the space shuttle Columbia. After qualifying as a pilot, the idea to become an astronaut came to her mind.

4. What abilities must an astronaut have, according to the journalist? (6)
Answer:
An aspiring astronaut needs a wide range of information. He should a know a lot about everything, from Biology to aeronautical engineering.

5. Describe Kalpana Chawla's first mission in space. (5)
Answer:
Kalpana Chawla's first mission was in space shuttle Columbia. It lasted for 15 days, 16 hours and 34 minutes. She went round the earth 252 times and travelled 10.45 million kilometers. The other ten members of the crew included a Japanese and a Ukranian astronaut. They performed various experiments.

6. What does Kalpana Chawla say about pursuing a dream? Do you agree with her that success is possible? (7)
Answer:
Kalpana Chawla sent a message from aboard Columbia to the students of her college in Chandigarh. She assured them that they could very well realise their dreams to success. The path was there. She wished them to find that path and walk on it with courage. She wished them a great journey.
