Rajiv Gandhi was the eldest son of Mrs. Indira Gandhi. His father's name was Feroz Shah Gandhi. He was born on 20th August, 1944 at Bombay. He was educated in Doon Public School, Dehradun. He got his higher education at Cambridge University, London.

He served as a pilot in Indian Airlines from 1972 to 1981. He left his job to join politics. He was elected as 'member of Lok Sabha from Amethi (U.P.) in 1981. He was re-elected to Lok Sabha in 1985 and 1989 respectively. He became the youngest Prime Minister of India after the death of his mother Mrs. Gandhi in November 1984.

Rajiv Gandhi was also the President of the Congress Party since 1984. During his prime ministership he entered into an agreement with Sant Harchand Singh Longowal to solve the Punjab-problem. He also made what is known as Assam accord. He visited many foreign countries as the P.M. of India. He was killed in a bomb-blast in Tamilnadu state in May 1991.
