Answer:
Gangabai was protesting because the garbage was not being collected from streets and if it remains uncollected it attracts dogs, rats and flies. Also people get ill from the smell. Even the children did not play in the streets because their parents were affraid that they get sick from staying on the streets too long.

Answer:
Municipal Councillors are the elected members of the Municipal Corporation. They are elected by the registered voters of the city for five years.

4. What did Gangabai do and why ?
Answer:
Gangabai and others wanted to protest because the garbage was not collected from the streets. Gangabai together with other people, Sanitation engineer and Ward councillor went to the Municipal Corporation office to meet Commissioner. When he started giving excuses saying that the Corporation did not have enough truck, Gangabai questioned him that how do they have trucks to collect garbage from the rich localities. The Commissioner promised to look into the matter and Gangabai threatened that if it was not collected in two days time, a large group of women would protest in front of his office.

5. How does Municipal Corporation earn the money to do its work ?
Answer:
The main sources of income for the Municipal Corporation are -
  • Collection of taxes from the people for providing various services, e.g., water tax, property tax.
  • Taxes on hotels or shops.
  • Taxes on entertainment like cinemas.

The second photograph which shows people pushing trolley full of garbage is segregrated is a safeful way of disposing garbage.

The dangers of collecting garbage in the manner shown in the first photograph are :
  1. People are standing on the garbage heap and work with bare hands, they are exposed to all kinds of infections.
  2. The stary cows and other animals are trying to find food and they also pollute the land.
  3. The garbage is not segregated into degradable and non - degradable.
  4. Pieces of broken glass can pierce the hands of the workers and there is a possibility that HIV germs may enter the bodies.
  5. The whole area is a filthy and polluted area which is a breeding ground for germs of all kind of diseases.
(iii) Why do you think that proper ways disposing garbage are not available to those who work in muncipalities ?
Answer:
The proper ways of disposing garbage are not available to those who work in the municipalities because :
  • Municipal Corporation does not provide gum boots and gloves to the workers.
  • The Corporation does not have garbage trucks which can automatically lift the garbage.
  • The Corporation does not provide enough landfills where the garbage can be dumped.
  • The people are expected to segregate the degradable and non - degradable garbage, which is not done by them.
