Introduction To The Story

Doing homework is certainly not a pleasant task. All the children find it boring as well as a needless burden. But the teachers everywhere assign some work to be done at home. Homework in the case of little ones means taxing the parents. The mother is more worried than the kid about it. She helps the child to do it. This is a daily exercise which no mother does with pleasure.
Patrick in the story is a little careless about studies. He neglects his studies and never does his homework. He takes keen interest only in games. His teacher's warning falls flat on him. But his luck favours him once. He saves the life of an elf, a little man from an imaginary fairy land. The elf promises to do the homework. But he needs Patrick's guidance. He makes the boy work hard for 35 days. Patrick is changed altogether. He forms the habit of working hard and doing his homework.

Summary In English

Patrick took little interest in learning his lessons. He never did homework. He called it unpleasant or boring. He took keen interest in games. He played baseball and basketball and a video game called nintendo. He did not heed his teacher's warning. He couldn't help neglecting studies.
One day he found his cat playing with a little doll. He snatched it away. he was surprised to discover that the doll was, in fact, a small sized man, wearing old fashioned breeches and a witch's tall hat. The man requested Patrick for help. He did not want to go back to the cat. In return he promised to grant Patrick's one wish. He was a little itself.
Patrick was mighty glad and felt lucky. He decided to solve his problem of homework. He asked the elf to do all his homework till the end of the term, that's 35 days. He wanted to get a grade. The elf didn't like the task, yet he agreed to do as desired by Patrick. He was true to his word.
But the elf had a problem. He had not read the subjects taught at school. He needed Patrick's help  in doing his homework. he came across a difficult word. He asked the boy to bring a dictionary and look up the word in it.
While doing math, the elf found the tables beyond his understanding. He needed Patrick's guidance in doing addition, subtraction and division. He knew nothing of human history. He asked patrick to bring help books from the library and read out certain pages.
As a matter of fact, everyday the elf kept Patrick busy, working harder than ever. patrick stayed up nights to study and help the little elf in doing homework. Finally, on the last of school, the elf slipped out the back door. The homework was completed and submitted.
Patrick got A's in every subject. His classmates were amazed, and his teachers full of praise. His parents wondered at the change in him. Patrick became a model boy who was cheerful and polite, and who kept his room clean.
Patrick still thought innocently that he had made the little elf do all his homework. But truly speaking he had done it himself.

Summary In Hindi

पैट्रिक को अपने पाठ याद करने में कोई रूचि न थी। वह अपना गृहकार्य कभी नहीं करता था। वह इसे उबाऊ अथवा अरुचिकर काम कहता था। उसकी रूचि थी खेलकूद में। वह बेसबॉल ,बास्केटबॉल तथा कंप्यूटर खेल खेला करता था। वह शिक्षक की चेतावनी को भी अनसुनी किये रहता था। अपनी पढाई पर ध्यान न देना उसकी मजबूरी बन गई थी। 
एक दिन उसने अपनी बिल्ली को एक गुड़िया के साथ खेलते पाया। उसने गुड़िया छीन ली। वह यह देखकर हैरान हो गया कि गुड़िया वास्तव में एक छोटे कद का आदमी है जो पुराने फैशन का छोटा पतलून पहने है और जादूगरनी वाला लम्बा हैट लगाये है। उस बौने ने पैट्रिक से सहायता की भीख मांगी। वह उस बिल्ली के चंगुल में फिर नहीं फसना चाहता था। इस सहायता  बदले में उसने पैट्रिक की एक माँग या इच्छा पूरी करने का वचन दिया। वह तो परीलोक का शैतान व्यक्ति था। 
पैट्रिक बहुत खुश हो गया, उसे लगा की उसकी किस्मत खुल गयी है। उसने अपना गृहकार्य की समस्या को हल करने का विचार बना लिया। उसने उस नन्हे व्यक्ति को बोला कि इस सत्र के अंत तक, अथार्त 35 दिनों तक मेरा सारा गृहकार्य कर दो। वह अच्छे अंक पाना चाहता था। बौने को यह काम पसंद नहीं आया फिर भी वह पैट्रिक की इच्छा पूरी करने को राजी हो गया। वह अपने वचन का पक्का निकला। 
पर बौने की अपनी एक समस्या थी। उसने स्कूल में पढ़ाये जाने वाले विषय पढ़े ही नहीं थे। उसे गृहकार्य करने के लिए पैट्रिक की मदद की ज़रुरत पड़ी। उसे एक कठिन शब्द समझ नहीं आया। उसने पैट्रिक को बोला कि शब्दकोश लाकर उसमे इस शब्द का अर्थ देखो। 
गणित करते समय बौने को पहाड़ा न आने की कठिनाई आई। उसे जोड़ , बाकि , भाग आदि करने में पैट्रिक की सहायता की ज़रुरत पड़ी। उसे मानव इतिहास की कोई जानकारी नहीं थी। उसने पैट्रिक को बोला कि पुस्तकालय से पुस्तकें लाओ और उसके कुछ पृष्ठ पढ़कर सुनाओ। 
वास्तव में हर दिन बौने ने पैट्रिक को व्यस्त रखा, उस से खूब परिश्रम कराया। पैट्रिक देर रात तक पढता था ताकि बौने की मदद कर सके। अंत में स्कूल जाने का अंतिम दिन आ गया और बौना पिछले दरवाज़े से बहार खिसक गया। होमवर्क पूरा हो चूका था तथा उसे शिक्षक को सौंप दिया गया था। पैट्रिक को हर विषय में 'ए ' ग्रेड मिला। उसके सहपाठी विस्मित रह गए तथा उसके शिक्षकों ने उसकी सराहना की। उसके माता - पिता भी बालक में आये इस परिवर्तन को देखकर हैरान रह गए। पैट्रिक एक आदर्श बालक बन गया था जो अब प्रसन्नचित तथा विनीत था तथा जो अपना कमरा भी साफ रखता था। 
अबोध पैट्रिक फिर भी मानता रहा कि उसने सारा काम बौने से करवा लिया था। पर सच पूछो तो सारा होमवर्क उसने स्वयं ही किया था।
