A Village Fair

Village fairs are very common in India. They are generally held on the occasion of some religious festivals. The site of the fair is generally a sacred place. The special feature of the village fairs is that they fulfil the needs of the rural people. I visited Ramnavami fair at my village Laxmipur in Bihar. The purchase and sale of cattle were the greatest attractions of the fairs. For this purpose, even people of towns visit the fairs. Generally, shops of one kind are arranged in one row. There are shops of sweets, tea, utensils, toys, wooden articles, handloom cloths, etc. Beside shops, there were hawkers who move about up and down the fair and sell their own little products. The village fair serves as a meeting place for people living far away from one another. It is also a good place for advertisement and propaganda.
