Answer:
Writing on a hard material cannot be destroyed easily. It cannot be infected by the moths and pests. It cannot be crumpled into powder, when dried (like in the case of leaves and barks). Writing on a hard material is a laborious job and cannot be exased easily.

Answer:
Manuscripts : The old books written by hands are called manuscripts. They are usually written on palm leaf or on specially prepared bark of a tree known as birch which grows in the Himalayas.
Inscription : Inscriptions are written on hard surfaces such as stone or metal.

Answer:
Rasheeda's question was how could anyone know what had happened so many years ago. There are various ways by which the people can about the past.
  • The remains left by the early man in the form of tools, weapons, pottery, jewellery etc.
  • After man had learnt the art of writing he wrote on leaves & bark of the trees and even on hard material. We have been able to read the script of these people (in many case).
4. Make a list of all the objects that archaeologists may find. Which of these could be made of stone ?
Answer:
The archaeologists study the remains of buildings made of stone and brick, painting and sculpture. They also dig under the surface of the earth to find tools, weapons, pots, pans and ornaments and coins.
Tools and weapons could have been of stone. Buildings were also made of stone.

5. Why do you think ordinary men and women did not generally keep records of what they did ?
Answer:
The ordinary men did not keep a reward of what they did because they did not know how to read and write. There was a specialized class of people called 'scribes' who recorded all the events.

6. Describe at least two ways, in which you think the lives of the king would have been different from those of farmers.
Answer:
The king led a luxurious life. He made all the decisions for the society and looked after their welfare. They led armies in war.
Farmers : They worked very hard to grow crops for the people. They led an ordinary life, where he could barely fulfill his needs.

7. Find out the words crafts persons on page 1. List at least five different crafts that you know about today. Are the crafts persons (a) men (b) women (c) both men and women ?
Answer:
Crafts persons are the people who make things at home with simple tools and with the help of family members. 
The different crafts are : (a) Spinning and weaving of cloth on handlooms, (b) Blacksmiths, (c) Pottery making, (d) Inlay work.
The crafts persons can both be men and women. Some crafts like the work of blacksmith can be done mainly by men. Some others pottery marking is done both by men & women.

8. What were the subjects on which books were written in the past ? Which of these would you like to read ?
Answer:
The books dealt with all kind of subjects like religious belief's and practices, the lives of the kings medicine and science. In addition there were epics, poems and plays. The most popular epics of India are Ramayana and Mahabharata. I would like to read these two books.
