Taro's Reward is a Japanese story with a message. It is meant chiefly for children. The story impresses upon the young minds that it is their moral duty to obey, honour and serve their parents. Taro gets a reward from the Emperor for his devotion to his old parents.
Taro was a young woodcutter. He had poor aged parents to look after. He worked hard but he earned very little. He was usually sad because he could not provide what his parents needed.
One evening, the aged father wished for a cup of Sake, an expensive Japanese drink. Taro felt all the more sad. He worked harder to earn more. Luck smiled on him and rewarded him. He chanced to discover a magic waterfall . Its water tasted like the Sake. A cup of the drink made his old father dance with joy.
The villagers came to know of the wonderful discovery. But the waterfall gave them only cold water. Angrily they looked for Taro to drown him in the waterfall. Taro managed to escape punishment.
The Emperor of Japan also heard the story and rewarded Taro with gold coins. He wanted to encourage all the children to serve their parents devotedly.
