1. Answer these questions.

(i) Why does the poet want to know where the teachers go at four 'o' clock?
Answer:
The child poet is naturally curious to know about his teacher who is special for him. As the school breaks up for the day after 4 o'clock, he goes home. He wonders where all his teachers go after school hours.

(ii) What are the things normal do that the poet talks about?
Answer:
Normal people go home in the afternoon. They take off trousers and get into pyjamas or any other casual dress. They spend some time before TV. They clean their nose. They live with their parents and their family. The poet wants to collect all such information about his teachers.

(iii) What does he imagine about
      (a) where teachers live?
      (b) what they do at home?
      (c) the people with whom they live?
      (d) their activities when they were children in school?
Answer:
(a) He imagines that his teachers also get into casual dress at home, wash their socks, clean their noses, and watch TV.
(b) The teachers live in a house with their family and parents.
(c) They have other members living in the house besides their parents.
(d) As children they too must have made mistakes and been punished. They too stole chocolates sometimes, lost their prayer book and left the green vegetables untouched. They too must have made scratches on the desktops and wore dirty trousers.

(iv) Why does the poet wonder if the teachers also do things that other people do?
Answer:
The child lives in constant awe of his teachers who are a mystery to him. He knows nothing about their home and their activities. So he thinks that they are not like ordinary people.

(v) How does the poet plan to find out? What will he do once he finds out?
Answer:
The poet plans to follow one of his teachers to his home. He will secretly watch his activities and his family. He will then put that information in a poem for the information of other children.

2. What do you think these phrases from the poem mean?
   (i) punished in the corner
  (ii) leave their greens
Answer:
(i) A child who steals chocolate flakes is punished by the teacher. He is told to stand in a corner.
(ii) Some children have no liking for green vegetables. So they do not eat them. They leave them untouched in their plates.
