Answer:
Jumman promised to support his old aunt as long as she lived. So she transferred her property to him. But after a couple of years he and his wife forgot the promise and began to harass her. Thus the situation changed.

2. When Jumman's aunt realised that she was not welcome in his house, what arrangement did she suggest? (3)
Answer:
The old lady realised that she was an unwanted burden on Jumman. So she suggested a way out. She demanded a monthly allowance so that she might set up a separate kitchen.

3. What was the villagers reaction when the aunt explained her case to them? (4)
Answer:
The old aunt went to every house in the village to seek support. But the most of the villagers either laughed at her or advised her to make peace with Jumman. Very few sympathised with her.

4. Why was Jumman happy over Algu's nomination as head panch? (6)
Answer:
Jumman felt inwardly happy when the old aunt named Algu as a head panch. The reason for his happiness was that he was sure to get the decision in his favour from his best friend Algu.

5. "God lives in the heart of Panch." the aunt said. What did she mean? (6)
Answer:
She meant that a panch has no friend nor enemy. He upholds firmly what is fair, just and true. This is a godly virtue. The panch thus becomes the mouthpiece of God.

6. What was Algu's verdict as head panch? How did Jumman take it? (7, 8)
Answer:
As head panch Algu set aside his personal feelings for his friend. He heard Jumman's case and cross - examined him. Finally he announced that Jumman must either grant his aunt monthly allowance or return her property to her.

7. Algu found himself in a tight spot. What was his problem? (9)
Answer:
Algu got into truble. He had sold one bullock to Samjhu Sahu who starved the animal to death. When Algu demanded the price of the bullock after a few months, Sahu got angry. He refused to pay even a penny for the worthless animal. Algu had to approached the panchayat for justice.

Answer:
Algu knew that Jumman had become his enemy after the verdict he had given in favour of the old aunt. He had a fear that Jumman would naturally try to take revenge as head panch. So his heart sank and he lost all hope.

9. What was Jumman's verdict as head panch? How did Algu take it? (14, 15)
Answer:
On occupying the post of a panch, Jumman became sensible and justice loving. He gave the verdict in favour of Algu. He ordered Sahu to pay the price of bullock that he owed to Algu.

10. Which of the following sums up the story best?
(i) "I also know that you will not kill your conscience for the sake of friendship."
(ii) "Let no one deviate from the path of justice and truth for friendship or enmity."

The words that sum up the story best are: Let no one deviate from the path of justice and truth for friendship or enmity. A judge becomes the representative of God. He is expected to put aside his personal feelings and give a fair decision.
