Asian Games started in 1951 in India. They became very popular all over the Asia in the last forty-three years. In the first Asiad a small number of small countries participated. In the ninth Asiad, thirty-three countries took part in it.
Ninth Asiad (Asiad 82) was held in New Delhi from November 19 to December , 1982. It was a great event for our country. Gymnastics, athletics, swimming, foot-ball and hockey were particularly popular. The opening and the closing ceremony were most beautiful and colourful. Appu was the mascot of the games.
China came our first, Japan second, North Korea third, South Korea fourth and India fifth. India unfortunately lost the gold medal in hockey. Pakistan won the gold medal. In short Asiad 82 was a great success. It brought glory to our country/
